Do you have to work in a pharmacy first to become a pharmacy technician? Is there special licensing? What do I need to know? Thanks.

Depends on your state
by: Jerry

It's mostly an entry level position in retail pharmacies (Ex: Walgreens, CVS, WalMart). The process kinda depends on your state. But, in nearly every state in the U.S. you'll need to register with the State BOP (Board of Pharmacy) and apply for a license. That usually requires some personal information and a small fee. Your background will be checked and several states now also require national certification from the PTCB or NHA. If your state requires national certification, you'll need to study for and pass the national exam. If you would like to see the kinds of questions on the national exam, have a look at the the practice exams on this site. Here we also have some of the tutorials on the subjects you'll find on the national exam, including the top 200 drugs and pharmacy laws. Let me know if you have more questions.
