DEA Controlled Sch drugs
by: B.R.

Ans.C-As a controlled substance, prescriptions will be valid for only 6 months from the date they are written with 6 total refills allowed (original & 5 refills). If only 4 refills are used in 6 months the prescription is no longer valid and the patient would not be allowed to obtain the remaining two refills. This could result in double the number of office visits required for the patient to maintain use of this medication which in turn produces increased costs to insurance carriers.

Schedule IV drugs
by: KC

A pharmacy may only fill or refill a prescription for a drug containing carisoprodol if all of the following requirements are met: the prescription was issued for a legitimate medical purpose by a DEA-registered practitioner acting in the usual course of professional practice (21 C.F.R. § 1306.04); the prescription contains all the information required by 21 C.F.R. § 1306.05; and the number of refills authorized by the prescribing practitioner is five or less (21 U.S.C. § 829(b)).

Carisoprodol is a schedule IV controlled substance and may not be filled or refilled more than six months after the date the prescription was issued. 21 U.S.C. § 829(b)
